Tanzania Bureau of Standards to launch new laboratory for efficiency

TANZANIA – Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) is set to launch a new special laboratory that will see efficiency of service delivery by the bureau increased, reports Daily News.

This is part of the commitment of the Tanzanian government in the implementation of its industrialisation agenda.

With the expected increased industrialisation, the new lab will ensure that the bureau has the capacity to quickly and efficiently release results of different products.

The lab will also ensure accelerated services delivery to importers, exporters, manufacturers, new investors and consumers of different products in the country.

The acting Director of Quality Management at the Bureau, Mr Lazaro Msasalaga has said that under full operation of the laboratory, results of the tested product samples will be released timely to facilitate smooth movement of goods to the intended market destinations.

“For instance it takes about three days for the release of the results on the tested imported product samples and around three weeks for locally manufactured products but with the coming of this modern Lab the results period will be shortened to around two days and two weeks respectively,” he said.

According to Mr Msasalaga, this will have positioned the bureau to accommodate the pressure that will arise after the directive’s call to stimulate local production and create employment   through the establishment of at least 100 industries in each region.

In the past few years, TBS had challenges after the Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority reported that the bureau was facing lack of adequate food safety and consumer protection inspector.

This had seen products of poor quality seized into the market posing a risk to the consumers.

However, since its establishment, the bureau has been vital in the government’s efforts to strengthen the supporting institutional infrastructure for the industry and commerce sectors of the economy.
