Nestle Ghana commissions an all-female production line in gender empowerment drive

GHANA – Food and drink company, Nestlé Ghana has commissioned a production line to be run and managed by women as part of its gender empowerment initiative.

The plant is the first of its kind in the 62 years history of the company in Ghana.

According to the Management of the company, aims at is part of the firm’s efforts to empower women in its value chain and ensure gender balance in its workforce to maximize productivity, reports Ghanaweb.

Speaking during the commissioning of the plant, Philomena Tan, Managing Director of Nestlé Ghana, who is the second female Managing Director of the company after Freda Duplan, said;

“Nestlé has been taking deliberate steps to empower more women to take up job positions at all levels including leadership.

Having a balanced and diverse workforce of men and women, we are able to capitalize on their complementary strengths that allow us to meet the needs of our consumers better and thus generating sustainable growth for the organization.

By this commissioning of all female production line, Nestlé is not just giving more women economic opportunities for the sake of it, Nestlé is empowering women to take up more roles to accelerate inclusion and enhance productivity in our workforce”.

Gifty Twum-Ampofo, Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, speaking at the ceremony, hailed the firm’s ambitions in championing gender balance and diversity in its workforce.

The facility has also integrated a nursery as a holding place for employees’ children while their parents are at work among other support facilities aimed at ensuring an enabling working environment for women.

Nestle has committed to achieve gender balance in all its Human Resources practices through both global and local initiatives on gender diversity.

World-wide, Nestle has laid down an action plan targeting to increase the number of women in senior executive positions globally through the launch of the Gender Balance Acceleration Plan.

The program further puts emphasis on increasing the proportion of women in the group’s top 200 senior executive positions from around 20% currently to 30% by 2022.

The new action plan reinforces the previous Gender Balance initiative launched in 2008.
