SWITZERLAND – Firmenich, a private Swiss company in the fragrance and flavor business, has announced a successful completion of registration of chemical substances as part of the European Union’s REACH regulation.
The company stated that the registration was designed to improve the protection of human health and the environment, and that REACH is a major European chemical law, standing for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals.
Adopted in 2007, REACH transfers the primary burden of proof to demonstrate the safety of chemical substances from regulatory authorities to individual companies who manufacture or import chemicals into the European Union.
The industry had until 31st May 2018 to demonstrate compliance, or face market exclusion and/or restrictions on production.
“Building on our 123-year legacy of responsible business, it is an absolute priority for Firmenich to work with safe and sustainable ingredients, while offering transparency to our customers,” said Gilbert Ghostine, CEO, Firmenich.
“I am very proud that we have demonstrated that our entire perfumery palette is fully REACH ready.”
“We successfully completed all REACH registration phases with over 500 ingredients registered, thanks to the continued efforts of our broad industry-leading team of experts,” said Jane Sinclair, General Counsel.
“A key outcome of this process is how we are aligned with our customers and suppliers to pursue relentlessly all aspects related to human health and the environment, and we will keep pushing for more breakthroughs in these areas.”
Following the completion of registration in the European Union, Firmenich will continue to work with regulatory authorities in the European Union to ensure ongoing compliance, as well as registration for similar REACH regulations in additional countries and regions, including Korea and Turkey.
