Amazon opens its biggest global campus in India to enhance investment

INDIA – American online retailer and technology company, Amazon has opened its biggest campus in the globally in Hyderabad, India, as the first Amazon-owned campus outside the US.

The 9.5-acre campus will house over 15,000 employees and features a 1.8 million square feet office space built over 3 million square feet area. It is Amazon’s single largest building in the world in terms of area.

Amit Agarwal, Senior Vice President and Country Manager, Amazon noted that the facility “is actually a symbol of commitment going forward as we grow in India to continue hiring talent to attract great builders for our customers,”

“Over the last 15 years we have invested significantly in India across 30 office spaces, the AWS APAC (Amazon Web Services Asia Pacific) region in Mumbai, 50 fulfilment centres in 13 states as well as hundreds of delivery and sorting centres, creating nearly 200,000 jobs.”

John Schoettler, Vice President of Global Real Estate and Facilities, Amazon added; “Our goal was to make sure the workplace enables employees to passionately serve our customers.

“The flexible spaces, creativity, productivity and collaboration are key attributes of Amazon’s work culture. Sustainability is also the core of this campus.

“The mechanical lighting system is state of the art. If measured by weight the building contains two and a half times more steel than Eiffel Tower,” Schoettler explains.

Although e-commerce constitutes just 3% of India’s total consumption, the country is considered the last major growth market for the e-commerce giant, but it faces increasing competition from local players.

Founder Jeff Bezos has committed an investment of over US$5 billion for India operations as the company seeks to fend off competition from Walmart Inc’s e-commerce unit Flipkart.

According to Schoettler Amazon started operations in India in 2004 from Hyderabad, but it launched its retail operations only in 2013 and has since added grocery delivery services under its Prime offerings and is also working on a restaurant food delivery service.

Agarwal said that Amazon currently exports Indian products of over 50,000 registered sellers through its global selling platform, and hopes to surpass US$5 billion in exports in the next three years from over US$1 billion so far.
