Nutreco partners with cell-based seafood startup BlueNalu

NETHERLANDS – Dutch animal nutrition and aquafeed company, Nutreco has announced a strategic partnership with a California-based innovative food company developing seafood products directly from fish cells, BlueNalu.

The two companies have formalized a partnership agreement, that builds upon BlueNalu’s platform technology for production of cell-based seafood products from a wide variety of species.

The partnership is intended to create a more stable and sustainable supply-chain solution as the global demand for seafood is continually increasing.

Nutreco will bring a breadth of knowledge and deep expertise to the partnership, including fish nutrition, raw materials expertise and ingredient procurement at competitive costs to advance sustainable solutions to feed the world.

Based in San Diego, California, BlueNalu began its operations in 2018 and recently launched one of its first commercial products, yellowtail amberjack, a whole-muscle seafood product prepared with various cooking techniques.

Commenting on the partnership, Lou Cooperhouse, President & CEO of BlueNalu, said, “The partnership with Nutreco is another significant milestone for BlueNalu, which will enable our team to accelerate our journey toward commercialization, while also securing a global supply chain partner.

“We expect this will provide significant value to our company, as it is our objective to introduce our seafood products in a test market during the next two years, and launch our products in several global markets by the end of this decade.” 

Rob Koremans, Nutreco CEO, says, “Since the global demand for protein is increasing, we need to provide protein from a variety of sources, including traditional aquaculture farming as well as new innovative solutions.

This announcement comes only a week after an announcement about Nutreco’s collaboration with cell-based meat start-up Mosa Meat.

Nutreco says that these partnerships amplify the company’s commitment to Feeding the Future with science-based innovations that advance sustainability across the value chain.

“Mosa Meat and BlueNalu are developing very exciting technology that could potentially transform the way in which our industry feeds the future and we are thrilled to contribute to these developments.

“A future opportunity for Nutreco may include becoming an ingredient supplier to the cell-based protein industry.”

These new strategic partnerships allow Nutreco to serve as an advisor in the development of alternative protein for food.

The partnerships with BlueNalu and Mosa Meat are made through Nutreco’s strategic innovation and investment team, NuFrontiers, and build on the research, ingredient sourcing and protein expertise of Nutreco companies Skretting and Trouw Nutrition.
