Unilever East Africa contributes towards fight against the COVID-19 pandemic

EAST AFRICA – Unilever East Africa has spelt out a wide-ranging set of measures in the fight against Covid-19 pandemic that will focus on people’s safety, essential supplies and community support.

The company’s actions are designed to help protect the lives and livelihoods of its multiple stakeholders – including its consumers and communities, its customers and suppliers, and its workforce in quest to lead in creating a brighter future for all East Africans.

The goods manufacturer of brands such as Royco, Lipton, Knorr and Pot Noodle hopes that the consolidated donation of food, soap, sanitizer and bleach will make a significant contribution towards protecting people’s lives and cushioning the society against the ravages of this pandemic.

“These are unprecedented times that call for true business leadership in facing the impact that coronavirus is having on our people’s lives and livelihood,’’ Justin Apsey, CEO Unilever East Africa.

This move comes at the back of Unilever’s global announcement that it will contribute a total of €600 million (US$649m) through cash flow relief as well as donations.

The package includes a €100 million (US$108m) contribution through donations of soap, sanitiser, bleach and food.

Unilever disclosed that it is making a product donation of soaps and sanitiser of at least €50 million (US$54m) to the COVID Action Platform of the World Economic Forum, which is supporting global health organisations and agencies with their response to the emergency.

In addition to the supply of soap, Unilever said that it will adapt its current manufacturing lines to produce sanitiser for use in hospitals, schools and other institutional settings.

A report by The Star reveals that, the consumer goods giant is now seeking to convene a coalition of local partners and has called out for proposals from those that can help in the immediate community awareness and behaviour change response through the coalition.

Requirements to be considered for partnerships include being able to mount a rapid response on an unprecedented scale.  The partner is also expected to deliver high-impact interventions to improve both personal and environmental hygiene to reduce the transmission of COVID-19.
