AB InBev debuts Budweiser Reserve Black Lager in collaboration with Jim Beam

USA AB InBev’s brewing major, Budweiser in partnership with Jim Beam have unveiled a specialty beer ‘Budweiser Reserve Black Lager’ with an alcohol by volume of 7.1%.

The limited edition of the specialty beer marks the second collaboration between Budweiser and Jim Beam, after last year’s release of Budweiser Reserve Copper Lager.

Budweiser Reserve Black Lager is aged on six-year Jim Beam bourbon barrel staves and boasts a dark auburn color, an oaky aroma with coffee and chocolate notes, a toasted malt taste, and a smooth finish.

Ricardo Marques, Vice president of marketing core and value brands at Anheuser-Busch, said: “Budweiser Reserve Copper Lager proved that when Budweiser and Jim Beam collaborate, good things happen.

“For the second collaboration between Bud and Beam, we wanted to brew something unique that would excite both beer lovers and bourbon aficionados. Budweiser Reserve Black Lager is a bold, bourbon-forward beer that’s perfect for the holidays.”

The beer ranks among the highest gravity lagers ever to emerge under the Budweiser banner. It will be released from October through December.

While the Budweiser Reserve Copper Lager is now available until March 2020, both ‘Reveerse Series’ beers will be sold in distinctive-looking 12 oz stubby bottles. Budweiser Reserve Black Lager will also be sold in premium 22 oz bomber bottle gift boxes.

Meanwhile, Budweiser has committed to phase out single use plastic pack rings from its entire range of beer brewed in the UK by the end of 2020.

The group is investing £6.3m (US$7.85m) in upgrading production at its two UK factories to produce alternatives to single-use plastic, which include recyclable paperboard as well as wraps and boxes.

The Stella Artois, Budweiser and Bud Light brand owner said the switch would help it eliminate 850 tonnes of plastic each year.

The investment will entail eliminating 250 tonnes of plastic rings previously used to hold packs of beer cans together and 600 tonnes of shrink film, mostly used as extra packaging around trays when shipping.

Paula Lindenberg, the president of Budweiser Brewing Group UK & Ireland, said: “This announcement ensures that the UK’s favourite beers will soon come in recyclable paperboard packaging, so consumers can make better choices.

“We’re proud of the work we’ve already done but we realised more needed to be done to address the issue of single-use plastics.”

The brewer is also switching to 100% locally sourced barley and 100% renewable electricity from solar power.
