AFA and ITA launch Lab Innova to train Kenyan horticulture exporters and strengthen EU trade ties.

KENYA – The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA), in partnership with the Italian Trade Agency (ITA), has launched the Lab Innova training program to support Kenya’s horticulture exporters in expanding their access to European markets.
The initiative was officially inaugurated by Italy’s Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Roberto Natali. The event also featured Christine Chesaro, Acting Director of the Horticultural Crops Directorate, who represented AFA’s Director General, Dr. Bruno Linyiru OGW.
Also in attendance were ITA Director Giuseppe Manenti and Umberto Trulli, along with other stakeholders from both countries.
The Lab Innova program is designed to enhance the technical and managerial capabilities of Kenyan exporters, helping them meet European Union (EU) market requirements. The training is expected to equip participants with knowledge on international standards, quality control, and business development strategies.
“This training will help Kenyan exporters position themselves more effectively in the EU market,” said Chesaro. “By improving technical skills and fostering business relationships with Italian firms, our exporters will have better opportunities to grow their trade.”
The program follows recent trade agreements between Kenya and Italy, reinforcing ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation in the horticulture sector.
Kenya and Italy strengthen trade ties
Last month, AFA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MACFRUT, an Italian organization dedicated to promoting the global fruit and vegetable sector. The agreement aims to enhance trade relations between the two countries.
The signing ceremony, attended by key officials, including Ambassador Natali, AFA Chairman Hon. Cornelly Serem, and KALRO Director General Dr. Eliud Kireger, marked a significant step toward deepening Kenya-Italy agricultural ties.
Representatives from Italian companies specializing in farm technology, machinery, and horticulture imports also participated in discussions with Kenyan exporters.
Under the MoU, MACFRUT has committed to establishing the just launched center of excellence for horticulture in Kenya.
The facility will provide farmers with hands-on training in modern agricultural techniques. Additionally, MACFRUT will facilitate visits by Italian buyers to Kenya while assisting Kenyan exporters in attending trade exhibitions in Italy.
“We believe this partnership will open more opportunities for Kenyan produce in the Italian market,” said MACFRUT President Renzo Piraccini. “By working closely with Kenyan exporters, we aim to build long-term trade connections that benefit both sides.”
Addressing challenges in the horticulture sector
Despite the importance of horticulture to Kenya’s economy, 2024 saw a decline in export revenues, dropping from approximately US$1.21 billion in 2023 to US$1.06 billion.
The decrease was attributed to a stronger Kenyan shilling, making exports less competitive, and logistical challenges caused by the Red Sea crisis.
Nevertheless, Kenya continues to be a key supplier of fresh produce to Italy, exporting avocados, mangoes, pineapples, passion fruits, green beans, peas, French beans, and herbs such as basil and mint.
With ongoing trade support and training, industry stakeholders are optimistic that the sector can recover. “Our goal is to support Kenyan exporters in navigating international trade dynamics and ensure they remain competitive,” said Manenti.
MACFRUT has reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating business connections between Kenyan farmers and Italian importers. These efforts include organizing trade missions and assisting Kenyan businesses in gaining market access through global events.
The next MACFRUT event is scheduled for May 6-8, 2025, at the Rimini Expo Centre in Italy. The exhibition will bring together professionals from across the horticulture industry, creating opportunities for partnerships and knowledge sharing.
