USA – Ahold Delhaize USA has introduced a new initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the potato farming process.
This program, focused on Scope 3 emissions, marks another step in the company’s long-term strategy to address environmental sustainability across its value chain.
The retail giant has partnered with Campbell’s Company in a three-year pilot program that will focus on lowering emissions linked to potato farming.
The program aims to improve soil health and implement regenerative agriculture practices in order to create more sustainable farming systems.
This partnership will affect three potato farms in North Carolina, New York, and Michigan, covering a total of 1,000 acres.
These farms are part of the land used each year to grow potatoes for Campbell’s products, which are sold in Ahold Delhaize USA’s local brand stores.
The potatoes grown as part of the pilot will be used in popular products such as Campbell’s soups and Cape Cod chips, alongside conventionally farmed potatoes.
“We’re excited to explore the potential positive impacts of regenerative agriculture on another crop as part of our continued progress on Scope 3,” said Marc Stolzman, Chief Sustainability Officer at Ahold Delhaize USA.
“Both companies have strong commitments to environmental sustainability, and we’re proud to work alongside Campbell’s to reduce emissions in the value chain.”
The pilot will emphasize several sustainable farming techniques, including cover cropping, composting, and the use of renewable energy for farm equipment.
The companies will also collaborate with farmers to measure the impact of these practices on both emissions and soil health. Since 2023, Campbell’s sustainable agricultural efforts have involved all its potato suppliers.
“Collaborations like this help connect our customers and consumers to the farmers who grow key ingredients in the food we make, while actively helping to advance sustainability and regenerative practices in our supply chain,” said Stewart Lindsay, Campbell’s Chief Sustainability Officer.
Matt Maughan, Director of Ag Innovation and Sustainability at CSS Farms, which operates one of the participating farms, shared his excitement about the project.
“With the support of Campbell’s and Ahold Delhaize USA, we are proud to advance our sustainability efforts in significant ways,” he said.
Ahold Delhaize USA is not stopping with this pilot. The company has announced a total of three farmland-focused pilots this year, with Campbell’s also planning similar initiatives.
Both companies are committed to meeting their Scope 3 obligations and expanding their sustainability efforts in the coming years.
“We’re very excited to obtain the learnings from these pilot projects,” said Kendrick Repko, Director of Sustainable Products at Ahold Delhaize USA. “The takeaways will allow us to broaden our partnerships and advance this important work.”
