UK – Aldi has announced plans to invest £55 million (US$56.7M) in expanding its retail footprint across London, unveiling plans to open nine new stores in 2025 as part of a broader £650 million (US$670.2M) UK investment.
Four of the new store locations have been confirmed, with launches set for Wimbledon, Fulham Broadway, Caterham, and Orpington over the next 12 months.
This expansion aligns with Aldi’s ongoing commitment to provide “unbeatable value” to more London shoppers, particularly in areas where budget-friendly options are in high demand.
In addition to the new stores, Aldi is undertaking renovations of existing London outlets, including its Colindale branch.
The company also aims to open 100 additional stores in London over the coming years, creating 3,500 jobs as part of its longer-term growth strategy.
Jonathan Neale, Aldi UK’s National Real Estate Managing Director, emphasized the importance of expanding access to affordable groceries in the capital.
“We strongly believe that everyone in Britain should have access to high-quality food at our unbeatable prices. But we know that there are still thousands of shoppers in the capital that don’t yet have access to an Aldi nearby,” he said.
Neale added that the expansion is driven by the company’s mission to address the gap in affordable shopping options, ensuring more Londoners can benefit from Aldi’s competitive pricing.
Aldi’s growth comes on the heels of a successful year, with the company named the UK’s cheapest supermarket of the year for 2024—a title it has held for four consecutive years.
The retailer also reported record-breaking Christmas sales, generating £1.6 billion (US$1.65B) in revenue during the four weeks leading up to Christmas Eve.
Additionally, Aldi plans to open 40 new stores in Spain in 2025, primarily in regions such as Andalusia, Madrid, Valencia, and Catalonia.
The expansion will bring its total store count in Spain to over 500, rivalling Alcampo’s network of approximately 530 stores.
Aldi also aims to strengthen its presence in Murcia, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands.
Aldi’s discount strategy has propelled its customer base in Spain to over 7 million, a 26 percent increase over three years, solidifying its position as the fastest-growing supermarket chain in the country.
