Algeria targets 160,000 Tons in fisheries production by 2030 with new technology, sustainable practices

ALGERIA – One of Algeria’s  Ministry of Fisheries and Fishing Products primary objectives is to increase fisheries production to 160,000 tons annually by 2030, according to Djamel Boulkhessaim, Inspector at the Ministry.

This target has been set with respect to the growing demand for fish and seafood in Algeria. He announced this in a recent interview on Algeria’s national radio program “Morning Guest,”.

He also discussed the significant role of the fisheries sector in the country’s food security efforts. He explained that the Algerian government is focusing on fisheries as part of its broader strategy to enhance food self-sufficiency and drive economic growth.

Boulkhessaim highlighted several initiatives aimed at boosting the industry, including granting access to high-seas fishing areas and offering incentives to expand aquaculture.

These steps align with the government’s commitment to utilizing marine resources sustainably to ensure food security.

Achieving this goal will contribute to the country’s economic plans, with a focus on modernizing the fisheries sector through new technology and sustainable management practices. A key part of the ministry’s approach includes upgrading fishing vessels.

Boulkhessaim mentioned that importing advanced engines for these vessels is essential to accessing better fishing grounds and improving overall efficiency.

This modernization is expected to increase national fish supply and potentially lower production costs, leading to more competitive pricing for consumers.

In addition to fleet upgrades, Boulkhessaim emphasized the importance of implementing remote vessel monitoring systems, which enhance both safety and resource management.

These systems allow for better tracking of fishing activities, improving safety for crews while protecting marine ecosystems.

They also contribute to the development of detailed maps of Algeria’s waters, optimizing operations and helping to preserve vulnerable fish species.

According to the ministry, Algeria’s fisheries production reached 85,998 metric tons in December 2022. In 2019, production stood at around 105,000 metric tons.

The country’s fish output is expected to rise to approximately 5,360 metric tons by 2028, with an annual growth rate of 1.2%.
