SOUTH AFRICA – At the recent annual general meeting in Knysna, the South African Poultry Association (SAPA) honored outstanding figures in the poultry industry, with Astral Foods’ Chief Operating Officer, Gary Arnold, receiving the prestigious title of “Poultry Person of the Year.”

This accolade recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the poultry sector, whether through technical expertise, marketing innovation, research advancements, or production excellence.

SAPA emphasized that nominees for this award are evaluated on the extraordinary nature of their achievements, and membership in the association is not a prerequisite.

Astral Foods, a prominent South African integrated poultry producer, has been a key player in the industry, providing everything from animal feed and broiler genetics to chick production and sales.

Established in April 2001 and listed on the JSE, Astral Foods stands as the largest integrated poultry producer in Southern Africa.

In related news, Chris Schutte, the current CEO of Astral Foods, has announced his intention to retire on January 30, 2025, coinciding with the company’s next annual general meeting.

Schutte, who has been with the company since 2002, began his career there as the retail sales manager for its subsidiary, Meadow Foods.

His career trajectory saw him advance to managing director of Astral’s Feed Division in 2004, join the company’s Board of Directors in 2006, and assume the CEO role in 2009.

Astral Foods has initiated the search for Schutte’s successor as he prepares to step down.
