SOUTH AFRICA – Beefmaster Group, a leading supplier of beef products, has invested over R4 million (US$209,780.48) in training and people development initiatives in 2023 in a move to boost employee growth and community development.

The initiative directly impacted 233 individuals in the agricultural and industrial sectors of Christiana and Kimberley, marking a substantial 230% increase in training expenditure compared to the previous year.

As the largest private employer in Kimberley, Beefmaster Group’s commitment to employee growth is reflected in their HR manager, Cindy Nkgoeng’s, statement.

She emphasized that investing in employees is central to the company’s philosophy, recognizing the pivotal role team members play in the company’s success.

The initiatives undertaken in 2023 covered a wide range, including nationally recognized learnership, artisan training, adult education and training, and bursaries for both internal staff and external students.

Notably, more than 150 individuals completed learnerships, earning a National Certificate in Fresh Meat Processing. Additionally, 40 unemployed individuals completed learnerships, obtaining a National Certificate in Food and Beverage Handling.

Highlighting the impact on youth employment, Nkgoeng mentions that 20 individuals who completed the Food and Beverage handling learnership were subsequently hired by the company.

“We are proud to announce that we’ve contributed to youth employment by hiring 20 individuals who completed the Food and Beverage handling learnership, while one of our bursary holders who is employed by the company completed their degree.”

Moreover, one of the company’s bursary holders successfully completed their degree, showcasing the positive outcomes of the initiative.

Seven staff members were awarded bursaries for professional development, while 17 individuals completed learnerships in General Management NQF 4 and NQF 5.

Furthermore, three artisans were trained, with two qualifying as electricians and one as a mechanical fitter. Thirteen individuals received training in communication and numeracy under Adult Education and Training.

These achievements are particularly noteworthy given the persistent unemployment challenges in regions like the Northern Cape and the North West, as highlighted in the Quarterly Labour Force Survey.

Despite some improvements, these provinces continue to face challenges, making Beefmaster Group’s initiatives crucial for local communities.

Looking ahead to 2024, Nkgoeng asserted that the company will build on the successes of 2023. Plans include offering bursaries to support employees in completing formal qualifications, learnerships, and courses aimed at acquiring diverse skill sets.

“The commitment to continuous workforce development is seen as a dual investment, empowering employees and contributing to the overall growth of the community. The company’s dedication to creating a dynamic and empowered workforce remains steadfast.”
