CANADA – US packaging company Berlin Packaging has acquired Canadian glass and closures distributor, United Bottles & Packaging (UB&P) in an effort to strengthen its position in the country.

United Bottles & Packaging provides bottles and closures for food products, as well as both non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, such as wine, spirits, beer and cider.

The 28-year-old company also offers a variety of services, including custom shapes, moulds, warehousing and logistics, case-packed pallets, and customised boxes and caps.

The acquisition is strategic to both companies as it will offer Berlin packaging a greater presence in Canada while providing UB&P access to vast global resources and custom products

Jacques Dalpé, president of United Bottles & Packaging, said: “We are excited for the opportunities this partnership will bring to our organisation.

Access to Berlin Packaging’s vast global resources and custom products will allow us to better serve our customers, grow our business with our existing suppliers and provide opportunities for our employees.”

Berlin Packaging’s acquisition could not be timelier as demand for glass packaging in Canada is skyrocketing driven mainly by the increase in beer consumption in the country.

The aesthetic appeal of glass containers has also ensured their usage in packing luxury products, portraying a sense of timeless prestige with which people want to be associated.

Growing awareness of the health and environmental benefits of glass has made consumers inclined toward glass bottles and containers further stimulating demand.

Mordor Intelligence now predicts that the Canada Glass Bottles and Containers Market which was valued at US$3.36 billion in 2020 will grow at a CAGR of 4.91% over the forecast period from 2021 – 2026.

The market is expected to reach US$14.97 billion at the end of the forecast period, according to the market research firm.

Bill Hayes, global CEO and president of Berlin Packaging, added: “Targeted acquisitions such as United Bottles & Packaging are a key component of our growth strategy.

This addition strengthens our position in Canada’s food and beverage markets as well as expands our glass offerings across all of North America.”
