ALGERIA –  Brazil’s poultry sector has made strides into the promising market of Algeria. Since October 2023, Algeria has welcomed Brazilian chicken imports, resulting in over 10,000 tons of frozen chicken meat arriving between January and April of the following year.

This milestone marks not only Brazil’s successful entry into the market but also hints at a potentially fruitful, long-term partnership that could bolster Algeria’s food security efforts.

The recent relaxation of regulations by the Algerian government has been pivotal in facilitating this new trading relationship.

Luis Rua, the market director for Brazil’s poultry industry group ABPA, underscores the importance of these regulatory changes.

Streamlined import procedures have enhanced the competitiveness of Brazilian poultry in Algeria, paving the way for these initial shipments.

Rua emphasizes the immense opportunities presented by the Algerian market, suggesting that Brazil is well-positioned to become a significant supplier of chicken meat to Algerian consumers.

The impact of these poultry exports is already evident – within a span of four months, poultry has surged to become one of Brazil’s top exports to Algeria, ranking ahead of commodities like corn and certain iron ore categories.

This surge underscores the strong demand for Brazilian chicken in Algeria, highlighting the strategic value of this burgeoning trade relationship.

This collaboration is mutually beneficial for both nations.

Brazil, renowned for its robust poultry production, gains access to a burgeoning market, bolstering its global role as a reliable chicken supplier.

Meanwhile, Algeria secures a steady supply of high-quality protein, which aligns with its goals to enhance food security.

The news come in the wake of yet another development in the industry.

Algerian Association of Banks and Financial Institutions (ABEF) recently granted authorization for the import of chicken from Spain, marking a significant stride in thawing diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Issued in a circular dated January 14, the authorization permits the import of various poultry inputs from Spain, including breeding chicks, laying chicks, and hatching eggs.

The resumption of trade relations between Algeria and Spain had stagnated since June 2022, primarily sparked by Spain’s stance supporting the autonomy of Western Sahara—a territory considered for decolonization under United Nations auspices.
