BRAZIL – Prices for chicken products in Brazil have continued to climb for the third consecutive month, according to recent data from Cepea (Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics).
The increase was observed across all regions analyzed by the institute, with demand remaining strong for chicken meat and its affordability becoming more appealing as beef prices rise.
Cepea reports indicate that frozen chicken meat prices in Greater São Paulo and Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul) wholesale markets saw month-over-month increases of 3.9% and 2.4% from September to October, with prices averaging US$ 1.32/kg and US$ 1.83/kg (BRL 10.15/kg) in these areas, respectively.
For chilled chicken meat in São Paulo, the average price in October also rose by 4% to US$1.32/kg, while Porto Alegre recorded a 2.3% rise, reaching US$1.83/kg.
As the second-largest chicken producer globally, behind only the United States, Brazil’s poultry production is projected to reach 14.9 million metric tons (MMT) by the end of 2023, marking a 3% increase over last year.
Production is expected to reach 15.1 MMT in 2024.
Brazil also leads the world in chicken meat exports, forecasted to export 4.85 MMT of chicken in 2023, a 9% increase from 2022, with an additional rise to 5.04 MMT anticipated for 2024.
On the domestic front, chicken meat consumption in Brazil is estimated at 10.06 MMT for 2023, with a slight decline expected in 2024 to around 10.02 MMT.
In a noteworthy development this year, Brazil successfully entered Algeria’s poultry market, exporting over 10,000 tons of frozen chicken since October 2023.
This expansion follows recent Algerian government adjustments to import regulations, aimed at facilitating food imports.
These regulatory changes have made it easier for Brazilian poultry products to reach Algeria, creating new opportunities for Brazilian exporters.
Luis Rua, the market director for ABPA (Brazilian Association of Animal Protein), highlighted that streamlined import procedures have played a significant role in Brazil’s market entry into Algeria, which could have long-term implications for trade between the two nations.
