USA – Brenntag, the global market leader in chemical and ingredients distribution, has acquired Monarch Group Holdings and its operating subsidiary Monarch Chemicals in the United Kingdom.

Brenntag gains expertise, infrastructure, as well as expanded liquid and powder blending capabilities with this transaction. Financial details of the deal are not being disclosed.

Monarch offers professional and reliable distribution services for essential chemicals and blends throughout the UK, supplying a wide range of industry sectors and product groups, such as Inorganic Chemicals, Citrates and Glycols.

The company operates several sites and blending facilities in the UK. In 2023, the Group reported annual sales of GBP 35.1 million.

Russel Argo, regional president Brenntag Essentials EMEA a.i., commented, “The team at Monarch have built a great product and service offering for their broad customer and supply partner base, and we look forward to growing and expanding that offering together.”

With our acquisition strategy, we expand our last mile service operations to bring a broader portfolio of products and value-added services to customers, supported by our regional supply chain services within our global network. With this extended offering, all our customers in the UK can benefit going forward.”

Brenntag has been expanding its reach across the globe not only through acquisitions but also partnerships. In June, the company entered into a strategic partnership with Lallemand for main parts of Europe, including the DACH region, Poland, France as well as the BeNeLux countries and Iberia.

The distribution agreement provides Brenntag customers across Europe exclusive access to Lallemand´s Nutrilife portfolio of baking enzymes. Lallemand specializes in the development and production of microorganisms and their derivatives.

The company provides microbiological solutions for dozens of different Food and Nutrition industries, like baking, oenology and brewing.

The Lallemand Nutrilife portfolio of standardized enzyme preparations is universally applicable for the full range of bakery applications, for instance to improve dough stability and processing as well as final volume in yeast-raised goods (e.g. bread, rolls).

Jerzy Jasiński, global president Nutrition and President Brenntag Specialties EMEA, said the company is expanding and building a portfolio of innovative supply partners like Lallemand to offer Brenntag customers the best solutions and value-added services for their products, as well as access to newest innovations and best-in-class applications.

Microorganisms (various yeast, bacteria, and fungi applications) and their enzymes help to improve the quality of baked goods, for example, by modifying dough in various ways and improving flavor, texture, and shelf life.

Enzymes continue to grow in importance for the baking & milling industry as they contribute to the realization of consistently high-quality bakery products by enabling better dough handling, providing anti-staling properties, and allowing control over crumb texture, color, taste, moisture, and volume.
