Sri Lanka— Cargills Convenient Foods Ltd, the leading manufacturer and processed meat exporter in Sri Lanka, has inaugurated its new state-of-the-art processing facility.
The facility, situated in Ja-ela alongside an existing plant, was built at a cost of Rs. 550 million (US$1.64 million), according to local media reports.
Cargills Convenient Foods bets on the facility to enhance its capacity to meet rising demand, especially in export markets, while also catering to domestic customers across various sectors like modern trade, general trade, and HORECA.
The company has earned a reputation for quality and innovation in the local food industry – they are responsible for brands such as Goldi, Sams, and Cargills Finest. That said. This move further highlights the company’s dedication to local economic growth and expansion in global markets.
According to Cargills, this new facility will meet and maintain international and local accreditations and certifications for food safety, quality management, and environmental management. It will also be equipped with advanced processing capabilities, including a braided line with center filling capabilities.
In line with the company’s commitment to sustainability, they have installed solar rooftop panels all over the premises – this is meant to reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
Moreover, it has an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) system that will treat water to be recycled for gardening purposes on-site, ensuring wastewater compliance with environmental regulations.
Mahinda Ganepola, Managing Director of Cargills Convenient Foods Ltd, expressed excitement about the new facility, citing it as a milestone in the company’s journey towards sustainable growth and excellence.
“By expanding our operational footprint, we aim to further strengthen our position as a leading player in the convenience food market, while simultaneously contributing to the development of local communities and the livestock sector,” he said.
The expansion not only strengthens Cargills Convenient Foods’ position in the convenience food market but also creates market opportunities for livestock farmers nationwide. Through collaborations with local suppliers, the company aims to foster a resilient and inclusive supply chain, benefiting stakeholders across the board.
