KENYA – Dubai-based Majid Al-Futtaim, the operator of Carrefour in Kenya has opened its 22nd store at the Promenade Mall in Nyali, Mombasa bolster its presence in the Kenyan market.

The grand unveiling, just ahead of the Christmas festivities, marked Carrefour’s third store in the coastal region, signaling the supermarket giant’s aggressive expansion in the country.

The Promenade Mall store, covering over 1,500 square meters, positions Carrefour as the anchor tenant, following previous successful ventures at Centre Point Mall in Diani and City Mall Nyali.

Christophe Orcet, Regional Director for East Africa at Majid Al Futtaim, expressed the company’s commitment to delivering quality, variety, and convenience to customers.

“The launch of our Promenade Mall store underlines our dedication to delivering quality, variety, and convenience to our customers,” he stated.

Carrefour’s aggressive expansion is in response to the growing demand in the Kenyan retail sector, where its primary competitors include Naivas and Quickmart supermarkets.

The new store aims to cater to the diverse needs of shoppers, offering an extensive array of product categories, ranging from groceries to everyday essentials.

With the addition of the Promenade Mall outlet, Carrefour’s footprint in Kenya has expanded from 19 branches in December 2022 to 22 currently.

The majority of its stores are strategically located in Nairobi, where major retailers traditionally establish operations before venturing into other major towns.

Carrefour entered the Kenyan market in 2016 and has since been on a trajectory of growth, not only in physical stores but also in the realm of e-commerce.

The French supermarket chain has capitalized on the rise of online shopping, recognizing it as a significant growth area.

Christophe Orcet emphasized the broader plans for growth within the country, emphasizing Carrefour’s commitment to investing in the local economy.

Meanwhile, the expansion has created job opportunities, with over 50 new colleagues welcomed to the Promenade Mall store, and an additional 60 jobs provided with the opening of the new store in Nairobi.

The retail giant’s presence extends to suburban malls in Nairobi, including the Hub, Garden City, Two Rivers, Southfield Mall, Thika Road Mall, Sarit, Nairobi Mega Mall, Village Market, Next Gen Mall, and Galleria Mall.

Carrefour’s second Central Business District branch at the Ellis Plaza along Wabera Street earlier this year further solidified its commitment to serving diverse communities.

“As Carrefour continues to establish itself as a key player in the Kenyan retail landscape, the company’s expansion not only benefits consumers with increased accessibility but also contributes to job creation and economic growth, aligning with Majid al Futtaim’s commitment to investing in the local economy.”
