SOUTH AFRICA—A new Checkers Foods has opened its doors for business in the Western Cape. This marks the second of its kind in the region and is conveniently located in Clara Anna Fontein Lifestyle Estate in Durbanville.
Checkers has launched smaller format stores that deliver the convenience, quality, and value for which the supermarket network is recognized as a consequence of customer demand for stores in local neighbourhoods.
According to Willem Hunlun, Chief Operating Officer for Checkers, Checkers Foods was created with the goal of offering customers everything they want and need right at their fingertips.
He emphasized that the company invested significant time in understanding their clients and their shopping preferences.
The new format boasts an expanded fresh food offering, including solution-based convenience ranges curated to meet specific customer needs, such as lunch, braai, dinner, or emergency purchases.
Additionally, the store features exclusive premium brands like Forage & Feast and Simple Truth. It houses a meat market with restaurant-quality steak, fresh sushi, and a hot and cold deli.
Furthermore, there is a bakery offering freshly made artisan breads, fresh fruit and vegetables, Krispy Kreme, a wine cellar, and a money market counter.
Linda Chetty, a dedicated employee with 23 years of experience, manages the 950m2 store, which has created 90 job opportunities, including 61 newly established positions. The store operates from 07:00 to 19:00, seven days a week.
Apart from Checkers Foods, the Checkers group includes Checkers Supermarkets, Checkers Hyper, and Checkers Sixty60.
In 1991, the Group acquired Checkers, a nationwide grocery chain with 169 locations and 16,500 employees in South Africa.
In 2001, the business decided to relaunch the Checkers brand to compete in the middle-to-upper income market.
Currently, Checkers offers three shop formats – supermarkets, smaller-format convenience stores, and large-format hypermarkets – along with an award-winning grocery delivery service.
Checkers Hypermarkets, typically situated in densely populated locations, are larger-format, broader-range stores catering to upper-income groups.
With over 30 stores, they offer a wide range of products, including fresh and frozen foods, home supplies, indoor and outdoor furniture, clothing, and a vast selection of branded appliances and multimedia devices in the TechX sections.
Launched in 2019, Checkers Sixty60 is a one-hour delivery service that has received numerous top-tier innovation awards, making it South Africa number one grocery delivery product.
It is a novel one-hour, on-demand food delivery service, representing South Africa’s first 60-minute grocery delivery service from a supermarket chain.
Where appropriate, stores are being renovated by implementing a redesigned FreshX store format, as seen in Sandton Hyper.
FreshX stores aim to enhance consumer involvement by providing a premium and interactive retail experience that prioritizes fresh food and convenience.
These modern supermarkets offer a clutter-free environment, wider aisles, and seamless flooring, ensuring a more relaxing shopping experience.
The store layout is designed to simplify the selection of foods appropriate for customers’ lifestyles and dietary needs.
