USA – After acquiring Lancaster-based Kunzler & Company earlier this year, Clemens Food Group has announced plans to relocate Kunzler’s production out of Lancaster and eliminate nine employee positions.
The decision comes as part of Clemens’ strategy to streamline its operations following the acquisition.
In a statement provided to News 8, Clemens Food Group’s communications manager confirmed the transition.
“Clemens Food Group (CFG) has made the decision to move the Kunzler Smoked Meats and Branded Franks production from the Lancaster facility to optimize our processes. As of now, Lancaster Smoked Meats production has been shifted to our modern facility in Hatfield, PA.”
Additionally, Clemens has transferred Kunzler and Hatfield branded franks production to a co-packer, resulting in reduced production and fewer delivery routes.
Consequently, the company terminated contracts with nine employees who were members of Teamsters Local Union No.
Clemens Food Group initially revealed the purchase of Kunzler & Co. Inc. in April.
As the fifth-largest pork producer in the U.S., Clemens noted that the acquisition would add three processing plants to its portfolio—one in Lancaster and two in Tyrone.
The company confirmed that products under the Kunzler brand would continue to be made, ensuring supply to its current customer base.
While the financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, Clemens Food Group highlighted that the acquisition would help increase its production capabilities.
The company has taken ownership of Kunzler’s plants, along with its transportation operations.
Clemens also stated that the location of Kunzler’s facilities in Lancaster and Tyrone aligns with its broader goal of strengthening Pennsylvania’s agriculture and food processing sectors.
Founded in Hatfield, PA, Clemens Food Group is a sixth-generation family-owned business, operating more than 25 farms across Indiana, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, and employing over 5,000 people.
