ITALY – Coca-Cola HBC Italia has unveiled plans for a substantial investment of over US$45 million in its Oricola (L’Aquila) factory located in Abruzzo, Italy.

As the main beverage bottler for The Coca-Cola Company in Italy, this investment signifies a pivotal move that will see the introduction of two new production lines for cans by the end of the year.

This marks a historic moment for the Oricola plant, which has primarily focused on recycled plastic products in the past. The new production lines are set to diversify its offerings, with one specifically dedicated to the production of energy drinks.

Moreover, the investment is expected to yield environmental benefits, reducing the energy required to bottle one litre of drink by more than 25 percent.

Giangiacomo Pierini, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director of Coca-Cola HBC Italia stated, “Oricola is historically a cutting-edge factory: it was among the first production sites in Italy to use recycled plastic, and today, with the announcement of the new modernization and expansion, we confirm the central role of this factory and this region in the strategies of growth of Coca-Cola HBC Italia.”

The investment is anticipated to double the plant’s capacity once both production lines are installed and operational, which is expected by the end of 2024. Approximately 50 employees are projected to join the workforce at the facility upon completion of both lines.

Operational since 1988, the Oricola plant has been committed to minimizing its environmental impact. It utilizes photovoltaic and cogeneration systems to generate the necessary energy for its operations.

This strategic investment emphasizes the vital role of Italy’s Abruzzo region for Coca-Cola HBC, as the company has been a significant contributor to the region’s economy and employment.

In June 2023, Coca-Cola HBC Italia secured the distribution rights for the Finlandia vodka brand in Italy, following a US$220 million deal with spirits giant Brown-Forman.

Starting this month, the company will be responsible for the distribution of Finlandia vodka in Italy.

Finlandia vodka joins its diverse spirits portfolio, which includes over 70 products, such as vodka, rum, tequila, mezcal, whisky, gin, aperitifs, vermouth, bitters, and sweet liqueurs.

Additionally, the company expanded its portfolio with the acquisition of Three Cents, a premium tonics and soda brand, in 2022. Founded in 2014, Three Cents offers artisanal, preservative-free products designed for quality mixology, catering to various cocktail combinations.
