Crown Beverages expands recycling efforts in Uganda with WastePays partnership

Crown Beverages partners with WastePays and PepsiCo to enhance PET collection, empower waste collectors, and promote sustainability across Uganda.

UGANDA – Crown Beverages Limited (CBL), in collaboration with WastePays and with support from PepsiCo Sub-Saharan Africa, has intensified its commitment to sustainable waste management in Uganda in celebration of Global Recycling Day.

As the authorized bottler of PepsiCo beverages in Uganda, CBL is driving impactful recycling initiatives across the country, focusing on empowering local waste collectors.

Over 500 waste collectors in Jinja are now earning an income through plastic waste collection, providing both financial opportunities and environmental benefits.

To enhance efficiency and transparency in PET collection, CBL has integrated digital tracking systems in partnership with Uganda WastePays. This technological advancement ensures accurate monitoring and streamlining of recycling processes.

Additionally, CBL is investing in school-based recycling programs and public awareness campaigns to educate young people on environmental sustainability.

“Crown Beverages is directly tackling waste in Uganda. We’re implementing solutions that empower communities and reduce our environmental footprint. We invite businesses and consumers to join our effort,” said Rogers Anguzu, Commercial Manager at CBL.

CBL remains committed to promoting a greener future through sustainable waste recovery and recycling initiatives. The company’s dedication aligns with PepsiCo’s broader sustainability vision for the region.

“Crown Beverages is bringing PepsiCo’s sustainability vision to life in Uganda. Their work is creating jobs – demonstrating how strategic partnerships and technology can create real impact, empower communities, and build a circular economy in the region. We’re proud to support their work,” said Bronwyn Patten, Senior Franchise Director, PepsiCo Sub-Saharan Africa.

The partnership reflects PepsiCo’s greater goal of achieving 100% recyclability of its packaging materials.

To achieve this, PepsiCo aims to have designed 98% of its packaging to be recyclable, compostable, biodegradable or reusable (RCBR) by 2025, and that 92% of its packaging will be overall RCBR — that is, both designed to be RCBR and RCBR based on availability of end-of-life solutions.

Crown Beverages Limited, Uganda’s oldest soft drinks company, produces a wide range of carbonated beverages, including Pepsi, 7up, Mountain Dew, Mirinda, Sting, and Aquafina water.
