DSM-Firmenich, Zenkei collaborate to improve sustainability in Japan’s egg industry
JAPAN – DSM-Firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health will work with Japan’s Zenkei Company, a livestock nutrition company, to reduce the environmental impact of egg and feed production in the country.
The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to introduce Sustell, a life cycle assessment platform developed by DSM-Firmenich, to assess and improve the sustainability of animal protein production.
Zenkei is set to implement Sustell’s cloud-based system to track and optimize the environmental footprint of feed and livestock farming, a move that aligns with its broader sustainability goals.
Speaking on the collaboration, Mongkol Kaewsutas, director of precision services for Greater APAC at DSM-Firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, said the partnership will support sustainable practices across the egg production sector.
He added that the platform will provide Zenkei with precise data to enhance efficiency, minimize environmental harm, and contribute to Japan’s sustainability targets.
Shotaro Takasugi, director and general manager of Zenkei, noted that achieving sustainable animal protein production goes beyond feed additives and farm management improvements.
He emphasized the importance of utilizing feed ingredients that are not suitable for human consumption, such as recycled food waste, and stated that Sustell’s environmental footprint calculations will be essential for the company’s strategy.
Japan’s Egg Market and Growth Projections
Japan’s egg industry is a significant market, with revenue projected to reach US$7.01 billion in 2025.
The sector is expected to grow at an annual rate of 3.48% between 2025 and 2030, driven by increasing demand and efficiency improvements in production.
Globally, China leads the industry, generating an estimated US$25 billion in revenue in 2025, far surpassing Japan’s market size.
On a per capita basis, Japan’s egg market is expected to generate US$56.97 per person in 2025, with an average consumption of 22.0 kilograms per individual.
By 2030, the total egg production volume in Japan is forecast to reach 3.02 billion kilograms, with a projected growth rate of 2.7% in 2026.
