ETHIOPIA – The Ethiopian Embassy in Doha has recognized the Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association (EHPEA) for its significant contributions to the Doha International Horticultural Expo 2023.
The association showcased Ethiopia’s vibrant horticulture sector, fostering connections with key players in the Qatari market and demonstrating the country’s rich agricultural potential.
During the expo, the Ethiopia Pavilion captivated visitors with a unique mix of culture and innovation, reflecting the diversity of the country’s 80 ethnic groups.
“We are proud to represent Ethiopia and highlight our horticulture industry’s excellence,” said an EHPEA representative. “Our goal was to create a platform that not only showcases our products but also celebrates our heritage.”
The pavilion served as a window into Ethiopia’s horticultural capabilities, allowing attendees to explore various products and learn about the innovative practices used by local farmers.
The association’s participation underscored Ethiopia’s commitment to expanding its presence in international markets.
Over the past year, EHPEA has made notable strides in enhancing the horticulture sector in Ethiopia. The association has addressed several key challenges that previously hindered growth, including resolving land lease disputes in Batu and Bishoftu through successful negotiations.
These efforts have benefited multiple farms and improved the overall business climate.
Additionally, EHPEA has tackled tax-related issues, including unjustified tax claims that were affecting its members. The association worked closely with government officials to update the incentive package for importing capital goods, aligning policies with current economic conditions.
“These achievements are crucial for creating a more favorable business climate for the horticulture sector,” stated the EHPEA report. “We are committed to continuous advocacy and dialogue to ensure long-term growth.”
Capacity building remains a priority for EHPEA as it aims to equip farmers with essential skills and knowledge. The association has implemented training programs focused on safe pesticide use, crop scouting, and farm safety.
“Our goal is to enhance the competitiveness of horticulture farms,” the report noted. “Through continuous training, we ensure that farms adhere to quality standards and sustainable practices.”
EHPEA has also prioritized gender-related training, working to create equitable workplaces in the horticulture sector.
More than 145 male employees participated in training aimed at challenging harmful gender norms. Furthermore, 130 members of gender committees received education on preventing violence against women and girls.
These initiatives demonstrate EHPEA’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all workers in the industry.
EHPEA invites everyone to visit its stand at the International Floriculture Trade Fair (IFTF) Expo 2024, located at Stand C3.02, from November 5 to 7.
