ETHIOPIA – Ethiopia is deepening its diplomatic engagement with Somalia to secure access to the sea, a strategic objective that has been gaining momentum in recent months.
According to Nebiat Getachew, spokesperson for Ethiopia’s foreign affairs ministry, ongoing discussions have reinforced cooperation between the two nations.
Getachew underscored the necessity of sea access for Ethiopia, stating that it is a matter of national significance. He noted that recent discussions between Ethiopian and Somali leaders reaffirmed mutual respect for sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
The leaders also expressed their willingness to work on an arrangement that grants Ethiopia access to Somali ports while respecting Somalia’s interests.
“Ethiopia and Somalia have renewed their commitment to each other’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity,” Getachew said. “Both governments have agreed to explore mutually beneficial projects that will strengthen regional cooperation.”
The strengthened relationship was further highlighted during Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s visit to Somalia. His visit marked an important step in cross-border diplomacy and paved the way for increased collaboration between the two countries.
Peacekeeping and economic cooperation
Ethiopia’s commitment extends beyond economic interests. The country has confirmed its participation in the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), reinforcing its role in peacekeeping and security efforts in the region.
Ethiopian troops are actively engaged in supporting stability within Somalia, a key factor in ensuring sustainable diplomatic and economic relations.
In December, Ethiopian and Somali officials met in Turkey to begin technical discussions on drafting a framework that would allow Ethiopia to use Somali ports while safeguarding Somalia’s territorial integrity.
The negotiations reflect a careful approach to balancing economic objectives with national interests.
Ethiopia’s agricultural trade fair expands
In another development, Ethiopia’s agricultural sector is preparing for the 2025 edition of its flagship trade fair in Addis Ababa.
Scheduled for April 1-3 at Millennium Hall, the event is expected to be the largest yet, attracting growers, buyers, and industry leaders from across the world.
HortiFlora, which started as a small trade fair, has grown into an important platform for Ethiopia’s flower industry, with additional focus on vegetables and fruits. With rising demand from the Middle East and Far East, interest in direct sales between growers and buyers is increasing.
“It’s a true grower-buyer fair, bringing together the industry’s biggest and most established growers. The ability to meet so many suppliers in one place is invaluable, saving buyers both time and money,” said Dick van Raamsdonk of HPP Exhibitions, the event organizer.
The Ethiopian Horticulture Producers Exporters Association (EHPEA) is also playing a key role in the event’s success.
Expanding opportunities in agriculture
The trade fair is expanding beyond flowers, incorporating more space for vegetables and fruits such as strawberries and beans. “As these products fall under EHPEA’s umbrella, their inclusion creates new business opportunities for traders across various agricultural sectors,” said van Raamsdonk.
International attendance is also increasing, particularly from Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East. “Traditionally, Ethiopian flowers were sold through auctions, but direct sales are becoming more common, a trend that has been developing for years,” he added.
This year’s event will feature 140 exhibitors, the largest number in its history. “I also believe it will be the most impressive, as this year’s flower displays are outstanding, and exhibitors are putting significant effort into their stands,” said van Raamsdonk.
Ethiopia’s efforts in diplomacy and trade highlight its strategic ambitions in both regional cooperation and economic growth.
