ETHIOPIA – Ethiopia’s coffee exports have contributed significantly to the country’s revenue, with earnings totaling US$835.2 million during the first nine months of the current fiscal year, starting from July 8, 2023.

Shafi Umer, Deputy Director-General of the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA), disclosed that the nation exported 174,596 tons of coffee to the international market during this period, marking a notable increase compared to the previous fiscal year.

Major destinations for Ethiopian coffee products include Saudi Arabia, South Korea, the United States, Germany, Japan, and China, highlighting the global demand for the country’s coffee.

Umer emphasized the remarkable progress of Ethiopia’s coffee industry, attributing it to the nation’s rigorous reforms in the sector. He noted that the industry generated over US$1.3 billion from coffee exports in the past fiscal year and anticipates reaching US$1.75 billion by the end of the current fiscal year.

Additionally, Ethiopia has been diversifying its international coffee market, with new countries joining the list of top buyers.

Countries like the United Arab Emirates, Sudan, and China have emerged as significant buyers, contributing to the expansion of Ethiopia’s coffee export destinations.

Umer highlighted ongoing reforms in coffee production, value chains, and market strategies aimed at achieving better results and fostering sustainable growth in the industry.

These earnings are particularly significant as Ethiopia continues its ambitious journey to quadruple coffee export revenues over 15 years.

The Comprehensive Ethiopian Coffee Strategy and Implementation Roadmap aim to elevate export revenues to between US$3.6 billion and US$4.6 billion by 2033, alongside a 160 percent increase in export volume and substantial growth in farmer incomes.

To achieve these goals, ECTA is investing in research and development of climate-resilient, disease-resistant coffee breeds, improving agronomy practices, and enhancing professionalism throughout the supply chain.

Ethiopia, the fifth-largest coffee producer globally and the largest in Africa, boasts a wide range of genetic varieties and is renowned for its specialty coffees’ delicate flavors and aromas.

Ethiopia aims to further solidify its position as a leading player in the global coffee market with continued strategic reforms and investments.
