The brewery’s launch marks a major milestone for Ethiopia’s beverage industry, boosting employment and economic growth in the region.
ETHIOPIA – Ethiopian-owned Kegna Beverages S.C. has officially commenced brewing operations at its newly completed brewery in Ginchi.
The facility is part of Ethiopia’s Agriculture Development-Led Industrialization (ADLI) strategy, aimed at enhancing the nation’s industrial and economic growth.
The company initially invested Birr 1.5 billion (US$13.5 million) in the project but has since expanded its investment to Birr 5 billion (US$45 million).
The brewery, which spans 109.075 hectares, is expected to create significant employment opportunities and drive development in related sectors.
CEO Etienne Thabiso Rouge acknowledged the collaborative effort behind the project, crediting the Regional Oromo Government, the Development Bank of Ethiopia, Siinqee Bank, and a dedicated team of Ethiopian professionals. The construction was executed by German firms Brewtech and Krones.
“The full Kegna Beverages SC will work hard to bring what we believe will be the best beer in Ethiopia to the market. Our teams across factory operations, technical, finance, supply chain, HR, and sales and marketing are focused on making this project a success,” Rouge stated.
In September 2024, Kegna Beverages confirmed that extensive financial, economic, social, and environmental evaluations were conducted to ensure the project’s long-term sustainability.
Founded in 2017, Kegna Beverages produces a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The company’s entry into the brewing market aligns with Ethiopia’s rising demand for alcoholic beverages, projected to reach 27,000 metric tons by 2028, according to ReportLinker.
With brewing operations now underway, Kegna Beverages is set to become a key player in Ethiopia’s expanding beverage sector.
