FRANCE – French bottled water company Evian has committed to make all of its plastic bottles from 100% recycled plastic by 2025 to reduce carbon emissions that have sparked global debate on the need of conserving the environment.

The initiative will enable the company to adopt a circular approach to its plastic usage, “where plastic is kept within the economy and out of nature”.

The strategy seeks to work with the waste management sector to deliver a zero plastic bottle waste ambition, together with partnerships to redesign its packaging, accelerate recycling initiatives and remove plastic waste from nature.

Danone, which owns the mineral water brand, is the latest company to respond demands for action over the millions of tonnes of plastic waste that end up in landfill sites and in the ocean.

In order to reach this waste diversion goal, Evian will partner with organizations including The Ocean Clean-up, Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Loop Industries.

Evian has joined companies like Iceland, McDonalds and Waitrose who have either created or reaffirmed commitments to phasing out plastics waste.

The brand will work globally with governments, recycling industry partners such as Veolia and consumers in the markets where it operates to increase collection and recycling rates of waste plastic bottles.

The collaboration came even after the Ellen MacArthur Foundation warned that there could be more plastic in our oceans than fish by 2050.

The UK Government and the European Union have since launched strategies to eliminate plastic waste by 2030 and 2042 respectively.

“Rooted in its pioneering spirit and long-lasting commitment towards sustainability, Evian will drive a step change to address the critical issue of plastic.

We want to use the power of our global brand to take a leadership position, drive collaboration across the industry and, together with partners, transform our approach to plastic,” said Patricia Oliva, Evian global brand director.

The company will also launch a social media campaign to drive awareness of closed-loop models for its consumers, supported by documentaries produced by VICE Impact.

Evian will also join former UN climate chief Christiana Figueres on her Mission 2020 initiative, which aims to reduce global emissions by 2020.
