UK – Ferrero, the global confectionery giant, has officially launched a plant-based version of its iconic hazelnut spread, Nutella, in select European markets.
The new product, named Nutella Plant-Based, is set to hit supermarket shelves in the autumn of 2024, initially in a 350g jar.
This latest innovation from Ferrero is part of the company’s efforts to meet the rising global demand for plant-based products.
Nutella Plant-Based replaces traditional milk ingredients with plant-based alternatives such as chickpeas and rice syrup, while still retaining the spread’s signature roasted hazelnuts and cocoa for the classic Nutella flavor and creamy texture.
The launch coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Nutella brand, which was first introduced in 1964.
Thomas Chatenier, Global President of Nutella, expressed excitement about the new product, stating, “For 60 years, millions of people around the world have begun their day enjoying breakfast with Nutella. We are excited to welcome even more people into the brand offering Nutella Plant-Based.”
The product has also received vegan accreditation from the Vegetarian Society, with Vanessa Brown, Head of Trademarks at the society, praising Ferrero’s initiative to cater to plant-based and vegan consumers.
This launch follows Ferrero’s announcement of a €170 million (US$189 million) investment in its German production facility to modernize operations.
The facility, which has been operational since 1956, will undergo significant upgrades, including the construction of a new production hall, following approval from the Gießen Regional Council.
In FY 2023, Ferrero reported a 20.7 percent increase in turnover, reaching €17 billion (US$18.84B), driven by both organic growth and strategic acquisitions, including the purchase of Wells Enterprises.
