First semi-automated chicken abattoir starts operations in Kenya

KENYA –  The first semi-automated chicken slaughterhouse has officially started operations in Kenya’s Nandi County, heralding a positive future for poultry farmers who will now have a ready market for their produce.

The facility located within Kapsabet Municipality was constructed by the County Government of Nandi through the support of the NARIGP project and has a production capacity of 500 birds per hour.

The National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Growth Project (NARIGP) is a Government of Kenya (GoK) project that is implemented through the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock Fisheries and Irrigation (MoALF&I), State Department for Crop Development (SDCD), with funding support from the World Bank.

The facility will be managed and operated by poultry farmers organized under the Kochen Gei Poultry Farmers’ Cooperative Society and is set to provide high-quality chicken products to chicken consumers in the county and the nation at large.

The flagship project of H.E Governor Stephen Sang’s administration aims to economically empower poultry farmers, the majority of whom are Women and Youth, by providing a ready and better market for their chicken.

The abattoir, located within Kapsabet Municipality next to the Kapsabet Slaughterhouse,  was constructed by the County Government of Nandi through the support of the NARIGP project.

During the handing over ceremony presided over by Nandi County Chief Officer for Cooperative Development, Ms Caroline Lagat, an order of 200 birds from a local food service facility.

Speaking during the handing over, the CO said the abattoir will improve food handling and food safety as well as attract more customers within the county and beyond.

“Consumers will also be assured of food safety through the provision of quality chicken products free from both physical and biological contaminants,” added Madam Caroline.

She lauded the cooperative leadership led by their Chairlady Mrs. Lenah Kitur and urged them to maintain high standards, competitive prices, and quality products.

Ms Lagat also challenged them to recruit more members to meet the market demand for chicken.

Martin Shikuku Rotich, the secretary of the group, expressed his gratitude towards the NARIGP project and the County Government of Nandi, acknowledging that the slaughterhouse provides a beacon of hope for poultry farmers throughout the county, as it creates a readily available market for their birds.
