Natural food colors, derived from sources like fruits, vegetables, and spices, are gaining traction due to health-conscious consumers and regulatory support for natural additives.
GLOBAL – Straits Research reported that the global food colour market will reach US$10.40 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 11.9% from US$3.78 billion in 2024.
As reported, food coloring or color additives are dyes, pigments, or chemicals that affect food or drink color and come in form of liquids, powders, gels, or pastes.
The four most frequent food coloring plant pigments are carotenoids (E160, E161, and E164), chlorophyllin (E140, 141), anthocyanins (E163), and betanin (E162).
The report indicated that one factor driving the growth is the increasing popularity of organic and natural foods among health-conscious people.
Due to this trend, naturally colored meals, such as those prepared with plant and vegetable ingredients like beetroot, turmeric, and spirulina, have become increasingly popular.
Additionally, innovative product formulations create tremendous opportunities to react to shifting consumer needs.
Manufacturers have access to cutting-edge technology, such as microencapsulation and nanoemulsion, that can increase food colors’ stability, solubility, and adaptability.
North America is estimated to exhibit a CAGR of 11.2% for the forecast period. As consumer demands for natural-colored meals have changed, natural product sales have skyrocketed.
Europe is the most significant global food colors market shareholder and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 10.9% over the forecast period. Disposable income improves European food color demand and market growth.
Sensient unveils Marine Blue Capri colour
Recently, Sensient Food Colors unveiled a new clean-label Marine Blue Capri colour, an alternative to the synthetic FD&C Blue 1 dye amid rising demand for natural colour solutions.
The launch follows the USA Food and Drug Administration announcement this January that FD&C Red 3 will no longer be an approved colour additive.
The solution, claimed to be the ‘first-of-its-kind,’ is the latest product of Sensient’s spirulina-based Marine Blue colour portfolio.
It is suitable for a wide range of beverages with acidic conditions, designed for optimal performance in RTD applications like carbonated soft drinks, juices, flavoured waters, low-ABV alcoholic beverages and more.
According to Sensient, Marine Blue Capri exhibits minimal precipation in end products and can provide ‘an answer long needed’ by beverage producers, offering unique advantages compared with other solutions.
For example, butterfly pea flower extract offers bold blues in higher pH conditions but is purple in low pH solutions.
Sensient has developed spirulina-based solutions for bright blues in different applications, such as Marine Blue for increased stability and Blue Microfine for dry mixes, oil-based applications and dispersions.
