KENYA -Police have apprehended four individuals accused of slaughtering stolen donkey meat, which was bound to be sold at Nairobi’s Burma market.
This incident followed the villagers’ capture of the suspects as they were reportedly slaughtering 30 donkeys near the Sagana River.
Kirwarwa Sub-location Assistant Chief Zacharia Miano Muchiri revealed that although four suspects were apprehended, three others managed to evade capture.
The police faced a challenging task as the mob attempted to mete out mob justice to the suspects.
The tense situation only eased when one of the captured suspects divulged critical information about their illicit operation in a bid to save their lives.
The suspect confessed that they sold the stolen donkey meat at Burma Market in Nairobi and paid those involved in the slaughter Ksh 10,000 (US$75) after concluding the business.
Such incidents of donkey theft have become increasingly prevalent across the country.
In a similar occurrence earlier this year, police arrested two individuals and impounded a motor vehicle in Lower Yatta, Kitui County, after recovering donkey meat.
Eastern regional police commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan reported that the arrests were made during a police operation at a residence in Katothya village, Lower Yatta subcounty, in the early hours of Sunday.
Investigations into the incident have been launched by DCI detectives attached to the Lower Yatta subcounty, with assistance sought from subcounty veterinary and public health officers.
Napeiyan indicated that the donkeys were believed to have been transported to the scene from an undisclosed location on the previous day.
As the investigations unfold, authorities are working to uncover the full extent of the illicit operation and ensure justice is served.
