GHANA – The Ghana International Trade and Finance Conference (GITFIC) has initiated a poultry production project aimed at addressing Ghana’s reliance on imported poultry products.
The organization has invested over US$70,000 in the venture, which includes both egg and chicken meat production as well as residential facilities on-site.
The initiative aligns with Ghana’s objective of enhancing local food production and economic independence.
Situated on five acres in the Eastern Region, the farm currently produces up to 5,000 eggs daily during peak periods to meet local demand.
Plans are in place to expand the facility to accommodate 30,000 birds, enabling increased production in the near future.
Once the laying period for the birds concludes, they will be processed into canned chicken sauce intended for both domestic and international markets, including exports under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
According to GITFIC CEO Selasi Koffi Ackom, the farm is overseen by a seasoned expert from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture with more than 30 years of experience in animal production.
A dedicated poultry processing plant is set for construction in March 2025, following finalized negotiations.
The facility will prepare poultry products for the market, contributing to the project’s financial sustainability.
The initiative is expected to help GITFIC increase its internally generated revenue.
The organization, which has grown from a national body to an international entity, has undertaken various projects such as the Global Debt Initiative.
This move into poultry production is seen as a necessary step toward financial independence amid reduced donor funding.
Beyond agriculture, GITFIC is engaged in international trade initiatives.
Recently, Mr. Ackom attended the United Nations Economic Community for Africa’s High-Level Intergovernmental Committee Meeting in Morocco, where he explored trade collaboration opportunities with Moroccan officials.
Discussions focused on AfCFTA implementation programs and trade commodity identification under the AfCFTA Guided Trade Initiative.
GITFIC also proposed the establishment of a joint trade committee involving Ghana and Morocco, which has been communicated to Ghana’s Ministry of Trade and Industry.
Talks on GITFIC’s Global Debt Initiative also took place, with Morocco invited to host the initiative’s second meeting in 2025.
