NIGERIA – Glovo, a leading multi-category app in Africa, has introduced ‘The Couriers Pledge’ in Nigeria, a commitment aimed at enhancing the social rights and benefits available to couriers, irrespective of their employment or work status with the company.

“The Couriers Pledge” initiative which was first introduced in 2021 has already had a positive impact on over 40,000 couriers in various countries worldwide where Glovo operates.

With its recent launch in Nigeria, this initiative is now being extended to all African countries served by Glovo. The Couriers Pledge includes the following key elements:

Fairer Earnings: Glovo is committed to ensuring that couriers receive proper and transparent hourly earnings that are in line with regional living wages and daily expenses.

360º Safety: The company is providing a range of safety measures, including assistance for accidents, third-party liability coverage, support for the transportation of goods, benefits for sickness, maternity and paternity leave, and urgent family expense benefits.

Proactive Management: Glovo aims to establish a fair appeals process for couriers and facilitate open dialogue with couriers to address their concerns.

Caring for Couriers Community: The company is offering training courses to enhance couriers’ professional skills, introducing an in-app SOS button for emergencies, and implementing an anti-discrimination policy.

“We believe that couriers deserve equal access to social rights and benefits, regardless of their contractual relationship with the platform,” Lamide Akinola, General Manager for Glovo Nigeria, stated.

“The successful launch of The Couriers Pledge in Nigeria represents a significant step towards creating a fairer working environment for our couriers in the region. We are proud to have all African markets covered under this initiative.”

As part of the launch event, couriers in attendance received comprehensive safety training provided by the Lagos State Drivers Institute (LASDRI).

Additionally, Glovo partnered with NEM Insurance to offer health check-ups for couriers, promoting their well-being and access to essential healthcare services.

Mrs. Bolanle Tiamiyu, General Manager of the Lagos State Drivers Institute (LASDRI), commended Glovo for its commitment to enhancing the rights and benefits of couriers, emphasizing the critical role they play in the local service delivery ecosystem.

She praised the company’s focus on safety and training, highlighting the importance of providing couriers with essential skills and knowledge to ensure safer roads and better services.

Glovo collaborated closely with the Fairwork Foundation, following principles and data on fair earnings and living wages, to develop The Couriers Pledge.

The initiative aims to set a new industry standard for fair working conditions in the gig economy, with a strong focus on the well-being and rights of couriers.
