NETHERLANDS – GNT Group has introduced GNT Ventures, a standalone investment firm dedicated to partnering with start-ups to drive advancements in plant-based colouring solutions.
The launch comes as the food and beverage sector increasingly prioritises sustainability and the use of natural ingredients.
GNT Ventures will focus on investing in early-stage companies developing technologies in areas such as raw material sourcing and fermentation, processing methods, ingredient innovation, and upcycling.
The firm is targeting funding rounds ranging from pre-seed to Series A, with plans to allocate up to US$1.1 million per investment.
One of its initial collaborations includes a partnership with Plume Biotechnology to enhance Exberry colour solutions through fermentation-based techniques.
Finn Rieken, managing director of GNT Ventures, highlighted the company’s commitment to building partnerships with start-ups aiming to create sustainable solutions within the industry.
This strategy aligns with the broader trend of established companies engaging with emerging firms to advance innovation.
To support its partners, GNT Ventures provides access to a food-grade pilot plant for testing and refining processes, alongside research and development support.
In addition to the venture’s establishment, GNT Group has expanded its product portfolio with the introduction of a new paprika emulsion to its Exberry range of plant-based colours.
The new product, Exberry Shade Vivid Orange, is designed to create clean-label orange hues for applications in products such as confectionery, dairy, baked goods, and plant-based meats.
Produced from non-GMO paprika, the water-dispersible colour provides high intensity, allowing manufacturers to use smaller quantities to achieve vibrant results.
It offers an alternative to additives like paprika oleoresin emulsion (E 160c) and Sunset Yellow (E 110), ensuring simpler ingredient lists.
The emulsion is created using physical processing methods without chemical solvents, enabling it to be classified as a food ingredient rather than an additive in many regions.
GNT Ventures’ dual focus on investment and innovation reflects the industry’s shift toward meeting consumer demand for sustainable and natural food solutions.
