SPAIN – Miguel Vergara, a family-run beef enterprise, has expanded its reach in the Spanish beef industry by acquiring the Valles del Esla beef business from El Enebro.

Although the financial terms of the deal remain confidential, this acquisition significantly boosts Miguel Vergara’s leadership in the sector, adding 1,600 pasture-raised cattle to its portfolio.

Valles del Esla, renowned for its high-quality beef, is produced at the Neal meat-processing facility located in the León mountains.

This site was established by the Álvarez family in 1996.

El Enebro, the holding company managed by the Álvarez family, will now shift its focus to its winery and agricultural real estate businesses.

El Enebro’s wine operations include the prestigious Vega Sicilia brand, acquired by the family in 1982, while their real estate activities are conducted through Finca El Quexigal.

In a statement, Miguel Vergara, the president and owner of the company, emphasized that this acquisition not only bolsters their capabilities and market leadership in premium beef but also underscores their commitment to sustainable production.

He highlighted their dedication to quality, environmental stewardship, biodiversity, and the sustainable development of rural areas.

Marta Guirao, the general manager of El Enebro, conveyed to the Spanish publication Lavanguardia that Valles del Esla has earned a reputation for excellence due to its unwavering commitment to quality and the strong relationships with its customers and suppliers.

Guirao noted the family’s efforts to sustain their commitment to the León mountains until the final moment, exploring options to ensure the continuity of their meat project.

Grupo Miguel Vergara operates as a vertically integrated farm-to-fork business, offering a range of premium beef products under the brands Vergara Blonde, Vergara Angus, and Vergara Beef.

The company claims to have the largest livestock herd in Spain, with a core focus on animal welfare and product quality.
