CONGO – Heineken has suspended operations in Goma and Bukavu, eastern DR Congo, due to the ongoing conflict in the region.
The brewing giant cited extensive looting and damage to its facilities, prompting a halt in activities at its local subsidiary, Bralima.
The company reported that its brewery and depots in Bukavu suffered severe losses following the withdrawal of Congolese forces and police on February 15.
“Widespread looting occurred in Bukavu by the local civilian population, affecting businesses, NGOs, and Bralima’s facilities. Assessing the full extent of the damage will take time,” Heineken stated.
The security crisis escalated last month when the M23 rebel group seized territory, including Bukavu and Goma. In response, Bralima had already suspended operations before the fighting reached these cities.
“Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our employees and their families. Before the conflict intensified, Bralima suspended all operations and provided resources to help employees shelter at home with regular safety check-ins,” the company said.
Despite the disruptions in Goma and Bukavu, Heineken assured that Bralima would continue operating in other parts of the country while implementing necessary precautions to safeguard employees.
The Dutch brewing company operates four breweries in DR Congo but does not disclose specific sales figures for the market.
In 2024, Heineken generated €4.13 billion (US$4.3 billion) in revenue from its Africa and Middle East segment, marking a 2.3, percent decline from the previous year.
The company sold 29.5 million hectolitres of beer in the region, down from 34.8 million hectolitres in 2023.
Heineken acknowledged significant challenges across its African markets in its annual report, citing currency devaluations in Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Egypt, as well as widespread inflation affecting consumer purchasing power.
Social unrest further complicated operations in multiple countries, including Ethiopia, DR Congo, Kenya, and Mozambique.
Despite these setbacks, Heineken reaffirmed its long-term commitment to the region while monitoring the evolving security situation in DR Congo.
