HyperSpectral emerges from stealth with US$8.5 million Series A funding

USA – HyperSpectral, an AI-powered spectral intelligence company specializing in particle detection, has emerged from stealth mode with an impressive $8.5 million Series A funding round.

The funding was co-led by RRE Ventures and Kibo Ventures, with additional participation from Correlation Ventures and GC&H Investments. This capital infusion will enable HyperSpectral to enhance its technology, recruit key talent, and expand its AI datasets through strategic lab partnerships and testing initiatives.

“This funding will accelerate our go-to-market strategy for our unique spectral AI technology with real-world applications in food and beverage safety, health care, and more industry sectors,” said Matt Theurer, co-founder and CEO of HyperSpectral.

“We are excited to prove to the world that our technology not only works but is faster and cheaper than traditional lab testing, allowing farmers, food processors, and physicians to get instant results with a quick scan.”

HyperSpectral has attracted significant interest across multiple industries, with food safety and healthcare standing out as key sectors.

The company has forged crucial partnerships with Case Western Reserve University and the Safe Food Alliance in the food safety domain.

These collaborations have paved the way for several pilot programs. Furthermore, HyperSpectral has secured a contract with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop defense applications for its technology.

“HyperSpectral is massively improving the speed and accuracy of food safety testing through the power of computer vision and AI,” said Will Porteous, General Partner at RRE Ventures. “This is just the first of a number of significant market applications of this powerful technology.”

Technology overview

HyperSpectral’s technology employs spectroscopy to analyze the unique absorption and emission of light from various sources. By leveraging artificial intelligence trained on extensive custom-created datasets, the technology can identify different particle spectroscopy signatures in real-world scenarios.

While the applications are numerous, HyperSpectral is focused on transforming how the agricultural and medical industries detect dangerous pathogens like E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, and Staphylococcus aureus.

Traditional pathogen testing is a laborious process requiring sample shipment to specialized labs for analysis.

HyperSpectral’s software platform, compatible with standard third-party hardware, allows users to conduct these tests onsite in minutes using a quick, non-intrusive scan. This innovation promises significantly faster threat detection.

“We have known part of the team for over seven years, before they founded HyperSpectral,” said Juan Lopez, partner at Kibo Ventures.

“They have demonstrated their capabilities as founders, with a proven track record of creating and scaling successful companies. We are thrilled to partner with them to unlock the power of spectral data using state-of-the-art AI and help them expand internationally.”
