INDIA – India is currently establishing itself as a significant player in the international Halal meat market, with exports reaching a valuation of approximately US$242 million in 2022.
Rising demand for Halal-certified products from regions including the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Southeast Asia, and North Africa has propelled India’s role in the sector.
Key importers of Indian Halal meat include nations such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt, Iran, and GCC countries, making adherence to Halal standards an essential requirement for exporters.
To align with the regulatory needs of importing countries, India has implemented the India Conformity Assessment Scheme (i-CAS).
This certification system ensures that products and services meet Islamic Shariah requirements, which are mandatory for entry into many markets.
Developed according to international certification practices, the i-CAS aims to streamline export processes while maintaining strict quality controls.
The Indian government has also introduced several initiatives to support exporters.
From October 2023, exporters who repay loans on time are eligible for a 1% interest rebate, alongside an increase in loan limits.
These changes aim to ease access to funding for exporters and enhance compliance with global Halal standards.
India’s Halal exports extend beyond meat to include other food items such as fish, Basmati rice, honey, and dairy products.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) oversees these exports to ensure compliance with quality and safety guidelines.
Additionally, India has engaged in multiple trade agreements, including 14 Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and 6 Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs).
Ongoing negotiations with trade blocs such as the UK and the EU include discussions on Halal-certified goods.
The global Halal food market, valued at over US$2 trillion, presents an opportunity for India to increase its market share.
