The sugar tax, aimed at addressing health concerns and reducing sugar consumption, has created challenges for producers who need to reformulate products without compromising taste.
ALGERIA – Ingredion, a provider of food and beverage ingredients, has showcased formulations that help manufacturers respond to Algeria’s sugar tax while maintaining consumer-preferred taste profiles at Djazagro 2025, which took place from 7-10 April.
As reported by the Asian Food Journal, the pressure to adapt to health and wellbeing trends intensifies during Ramadan when sugar consumption traditionally increases, yet consumers still expect satisfying taste experiences.
Ingredion’s on-stand concepts, spanning bakery, beverages, and beyond, address this challenge through sugar-reduction formulations that don’t sacrifice flavour.
These formulations enable manufacturers to meet regulatory requirements and consumer expectations while managing production costs effectively.
Quentin Labbe, Sales and Technical Services Manager for the MEA at Ingredion, said, “We’re facing unique challenges in balancing traditional taste preferences with growing health concerns.”
He explained that the introduction of the sugar tax in Algeria, combined with increased local production and new product development, has created a highly competitive landscape where manufacturers must innovate to succeed.
He stated that at Ingredion, beverage concepts demonstrate how manufacturers can reduce sugar significantly while maintaining the sweetness profiles that local consumers expect.
Additionally, the company’s solutions for improved freshness and cocoa reduction in bakery applications help manufacturers control costs without compromising quality.
“These innovations are particularly crucial now, as economic pressures impact consumer spending patterns. Our prototypes, from sugar-reduced soft drinks to protein-enriched brownies, show how manufacturers can deliver healthier options that still meet local taste preferences while managing production costs effectively,” he added.
Djazagro is the leading trade show in North Africa, with an exhaustive international offering in six sectors of activities: processing, filling & packaging, bakery—pastry, food products & beverages, ingredients & flavourings, hospitality & food service, and hygiene.
This year’s Djazagro came at a critical time for the Algerian market, where health and wellness trends are on the rise, prompting producers to reformulate their products.
Ingredion primarily produces starches, non-GMO sweeteners, stevia, and pea protein, transforming corn, tapioca, potatoes, plant-based stevia, grains, fruits, gums, and other vegetables into ingredients for the food, beverage, brewing, pharmaceutical, and many other industrial sectors.
Stand visitors explored how the company’s expertise in texture and sweetness can help overcome key formulation challenges across various applications.
