ICELAND – Innovasea, a global leader in advanced aquatic solutions and equipment for aquaculture and fish tracking, is extending its land-based aquaculture systems to Iceland.
Marc Turano, Vice President of Innovasea, expresses enthusiasm about this development, highlighting Iceland’s commitment to sustainable aquaculture
Thor Salmon is facilitating Innovasea’s entry into the Icelandic market by integrating the company’s advanced Gas Management Towers (GMT) into its smolt production facility in Thorlakshofn, located in South Iceland.
The GMT units offered by Innovasea feature a gravity-based design that eliminates the necessity for pressurized oxygenation, which can save up to 77% in energy compared to conventional pressurized systems.
Additionally, these units combine a low-head oxygenator and a degasser into a single apparatus, presenting a more compact and safer solution for aquaculture operations.
Three GMT units, complete with dissolved oxygen (DO) sensors and an automated control panel, are being installed by Thor Salmon.
This technology will facilitate precise and remote monitoring of oxygen levels, a crucial aspect for the production of 20,000 metric tons of salmon per year, according to Jonatan Thordarson, Co-Founder of Thor Salmon.
Innovasea, known for its advanced solutions in fish tracking and aquaculture, is making this move shortly after launching HydroAI in May.
HydroAI integrates high-resolution cameras with AI-driven, cloud-based software to deliver real-time fish counts and species identification around hydropower plants.
The HydroAI system includes passage cameras that work with existing fish infrastructure to capture continuous imagery.
The AI software utilizes machine learning to count and identify fish accurately, providing essential data on fish movement around and within hydro facilities.
David Kelly, CEO of Innovasea, leads the company, which has secured US$15.2 million in funding across one investment round.
