India’s sugar production remains stable, with 54 lakh tonnes expected by September 2025, ensuring sufficient supply despite regional yield fluctuations.
INDIA – The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has assured that sugar availability remains stable for the ongoing 2024-25 (October–September) marketing season, addressing any concerns about supply shortages.
ISMA projects a closing stock of 54 lakh tonnes by September 2025, with sugar production estimated at 264 lakh tonnes after ethanol diversion.
As of March 15, 2025, India had already produced 238 lakh tonnes, with around 200 mills still operational.
In Uttar Pradesh, nearly 75% of sugar factories remain active, with improved cane recovery expected to extend the crushing season until April.
While Maharashtra and Karnataka have recorded lower cane yields, some mills in Karnataka are likely to resume operations during a special season in June–July 2025. Additionally, Tamil Nadu mills are expected to contribute to production during this period.
Following a review by ISMA’s Executive Committee on March 12, 2025, the net sugar production estimate, after diverting 35 lakh tonnes for ethanol, was revised to 264 lakh tonnes.
Despite regional variations in output, ISMA reassures that sugar stocks will comfortably meet domestic demand.
Looking ahead to the 2025-26 season, ISMA remains optimistic, citing favorable weather conditions and improved cane planting. A strong 2024 monsoon has enhanced planting, particularly in Maharashtra and Karnataka, ensuring an on-time start to the crushing season in October 2025.
In Uttar Pradesh and other northern states, efforts to introduce improved cane varieties are already yielding positive results, expected to boost yields and recovery rates.
The Indian government’s decision, announced on January 20, 2025, to allow the export of 10 lakh tonnes of sugar has significantly benefited the industry. This move has balanced domestic sugar stocks and ensured financial stability for millers.
As of mid-March 2025, nearly 80% of cane payments for the current season have been cleared, a significant improvement from 69% by mid-January 2024.
Additionally, 99.9% of cane payments from the previous season have been settled, providing financial security for farmers.
