BRAZIL – JBS has released its 2023 Sustainability Report, detailing the company’s ongoing approach to sustainability, the actions it is taking across its value chain, and its progress toward achieving global environmental goals.
The report outlines several strategies the company is currently implementing across operations in countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Europe, Mexico, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Since 2019, JBS has reduced its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 17%, thanks in part to investments of over US$150 million in facility upgrades aimed at lowering emissions.
In addition, the company has approved more than US$5 million in projects designed to reduce Scope 3 emissions across its supply chain.
In Brazil, JBS is working on initiatives to increase transparency and traceability within the livestock industry, such as the Transparent Livestock Farming Platform.
In the UK, the company is making investments in climate-friendly facility improvements and developing an off-grid poultry farm with future-focused technology.
Meanwhile, in the U.S. and Australia, JBS is establishing projects that convert methane into renewable energy.
JBS is aiming to set new standards for sustainable food production, focusing on enhancing the sustainability and resilience of its own operations, while also contributing to improvements throughout the larger food system.
As part of its commitment to reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, JBS is outlining five initial steps.
These include a plan to invest over US$1 billion in facility and equipment upgrades by 2030 and allocate US$100 million to research and development projects by the same year.
The company is also targeting a 30% reduction in emissions across all of its facilities by 2030 and is working toward using only renewable electricity by 2040.
In an effort to ensure accountability, JBS is also tying environmental performance to executive compensation.
