SOUTH AFRICA – South African Airways (SAA) has confirmed the appointment of John M. Lamola as its Group Chief Executive Officer, a decision approved by Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy.
The airline’s Board believes Lamola’s leadership will strengthen SAA’s financial future and operational stability.
Lamola, who has served as interim CEO since May 2022, is well-versed in the airline’s challenges and future direction. His leadership has been credited with guiding SAA through a financial recovery, ensuring its continued presence as a key player in regional and international aviation.
Under Lamola’s leadership, SAA returned to profitability, reporting a net profit of R252 million (US$13.61 million) in the 2022/23 financial year. The airline’s revenue also grew significantly, reaching R5.7 billion (US$307.8 million), a notable increase from R2 billion (US$108 million) in the previous year.
“SAA has demonstrated strong financial progress, and this appointment reinforces our commitment to ensuring long-term success,” stated an official release from the airline.
The airline has steadily expanded its routes and fleet. By January 2025, SAA is expected to operate flights to 16 destinations, a significant increase from six in 2021.
The fleet has also grown from six aircraft to 20, including the addition of two Airbus A380s. The company’s workforce has expanded from 800 employees in 2021 to approximately 2,000 as of November 2024, including 140 pilots.
The SAA Board expressed confidence in Lamola’s ability to sustain the airline’s progress. Derek Hanekom, Interim Chairperson of the Board, praised his leadership, stating, “The SAA Board is delighted to be able to appoint a solid and dedicated leader well versed in SAA’s fortunes and eager to continue overseeing its take-off into better skies. We wish Professor Lamola and SAA safe flight into an even brighter future.”
Lamola brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as CEO at Denel Aviation between 1996 and 2001. He was also a board member at the Airports Company South Africa from 2012 to 2017.
SAA’s strategic developments align with broader shifts in the aviation and freight industries. As global businesses prioritize sustainability, South Africa’s freight sector is also adapting.
Companies are now integrating environmentally friendly logistics, with a growing emphasis on reducing emissions and adopting clean energy solutions.
European shareholders and international stakeholders have increasingly advocated for sustainable business practices, influencing the strategic priorities of companies operating in emerging markets like South Africa.
These trends reflect a shift where financial resilience and environmental responsibility are becoming interconnected.
Lamola’s appointment signals a period of continuity and progress for SAA, as the airline continues to solidify its financial standing while expanding its footprint in the aviation industry.
