Kenya Breweries commits US$417K to Upper Tana watershed conservation

The investment supports climate action, water conservation, and sustainable farming practices to secure Nairobi’s water supply and boost livelihoods.

KENYA – Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL), a subsidiary of East African Breweries Limited, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund Trust (UTNWFT) to enhance conservation and sustainability efforts within the Upper Tana Watershed.

The watershed supplies 95 percent of Nairobi’s water and contributes 65 percent of Kenya’s hydropower.

During the signing ceremony at KBL’s Water Recovery Plant, the company announced a KSh 54 million grant to expand conservation initiatives. This builds on its Kes 119 million (US$919.6K) investment in 2024, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability.

The funding will facilitate the planting of high-value fruit trees to mitigate climate change, improve food security, and generate income for farmers.

Additionally, it will support terrace construction to prevent soil erosion and protect riparian land. The investment will also finance the construction of water pans and installation of irrigation kits across the Upper Tana watershed, including the Mt. Kenya and Aberdare ranges, broadening conservation efforts.

“Our partnership with the Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund Trust reflects KBL’s dedication to safeguarding vital resources. By working together, we aim to ensure access to clean and safe water, support agriculture, and promote environmental sustainability,” said Eric Kiniti, Group Corporate Relations Director at KBL.

Nahashon Muguna, Managing Director and CEO of Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company, commended KBL for its ongoing commitment to water conservation.

He encouraged more private sector participation in public-private collaborations for sustainable water management.

This marks KBL’s third commitment to the Upper Tana conservation efforts. In 2024, the company pledged KSh 60 million (US$463.8K) to UTNWFT, bringing its total funding for environmental initiatives to KSh 190 million.

The strategy focuses on restoring Kenya’s water towers, combating climate change, reducing carbon emissions, and addressing water scarcity.

In 2023, KBL contributed KSh 5 million to the initiative, supporting farmers in planting high-value fruit trees to enhance environmental resilience while providing food and additional income.

Through these investments, KBL aims to strengthen water security, support agricultural sustainability, and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change in Kenya.
