Kenya Breweries appoints Charles Okanya as Acting Marketing Director

KENYA – Kenya Breweries Ltd (KBL), a subsidiary of East African Breweries PLC (EABL), has announced the appointment of Charles Okanya as the Acting Marketing Director, effective September 1, 2024.

Okanya, who currently serves as the Head of Consumer Planning at EABL, will temporarily oversee all marketing initiatives at KBL.

He brings over 15 years of experience in strategy and marketing insight functions across Africa, having worked in five markets on the continent.

According to KBL, he specialises in leading the business with ideas and insights that help sell more by critically understanding why consumers behave as they do and where their behaviours intersect with business objectives.

Before joining Diageo Kenya seven years ago, Okanya held various roles in research and strategy agencies, including Nielsen, Synovate, Kantar, and Ipsos, where he led advertising research solutions.

His career has seen him conduct over 100 market and social research studies in Sub-Saharan Africa, providing him with a broad perspective on cultural sensitivity.

This appointment follows the release of EABL’s financial results for the year ending June 31, 2024.

Despite a challenging macroeconomic environment, EABL delivered strong performance, with net sales increasing by 13 percent to KES 124.1 billion (US$962.98M), up from KES 109.6 billion (US$850.47M) in the previous fiscal year.

The spirits category grew by 10 percent, while the beer segment saw a 12 percent increase.

The company also recorded regional growth, with Kenya leading with a 15 percent increase in sales, followed by Uganda at 12 percent and Tanzania at 9 percent.

However, the Group’s profit after tax decreased by 12 percent to KES 10.9 billion (US$84.58M) compared to the previous year.
