Kenya Breweries wins 2024 Solenis Sustainability Award for water recovery project

KENYA – Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) has been awarded the 2024 Solenis Sustainability Award for its water recovery project at the Kisumu Brewery, marking a significant achievement in its sustainability efforts.

The project has led to improved operational efficiency, reduced water and energy consumption, and enhanced workplace safety.

The Solenis Sustainability Award is an annual recognition program that honors companies implementing innovative projects with measurable sustainability outcomes.

KBL received the award in collaboration with Diversey, a provider of cleaning and hygiene products, which helped reduce the number of products used in the water recovery project by half.

KBL’s initiative has achieved impressive sustainability benefits, including an annual water savings of 624,000 liters and a reduction in energy consumption by 780 kWh.

The project also minimizes the handling and packaging of chemicals, improving workplace safety and lowering the company’s carbon footprint.

With a 97 percent water recovery rate, the project aligns with KBL’s sustainability strategy, which focuses on optimizing raw material utilization, reducing waste, and improving operational efficiency.

“Sustainability is at the heart of our operations at Kenya Breweries. This recognition underscores our commitment to innovative solutions that drive efficiency while protecting our environment,” said Mark Ocitti, Managing Director of KBL.

The water recovery project enhances the existing Clean-In-Place (CIP) process by introducing a single-stage CIP system using OSA-N (Biocidal Acid). This advancement eliminates the need for separate acid and disinfectant steps while maintaining product quality and safety standards.

KBL unveils new barley varieties

Beyond sustainability efforts, KBL is actively engaging in agricultural initiatives to support local farmers.

Recently, in partnership with the Cereal Growers Association (CGA) and the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, Narok, the company hosted a Farmers Field Day at Purko Sheep Ranch in Tipis, Narok County.

Held under the theme “Crop Rotation for Enhanced Agricultural Productivity,” the event brought together farmers cultivating barley, wheat, canola, and green peas.

The gathering provided a platform for stakeholders in the agribusiness sector to exchange ideas, foster connections, and explore new business opportunities.

During the event, KBL introduced two new barley varieties, Propino and Laurette, developed in collaboration with the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (Kephis) and approved by the National Variety Release Council (NVRC).

Farmers also received training on best agricultural practices, including regenerative agriculture techniques to enhance soil health and productivity.

Additionally, they were educated on the correct use of chemical products, covering application rates, target pests, timing, and safety standards.
