KENYA – In response to the ongoing extreme weather conditions in the Kenya coastline, the governsafeguardment has taken decisive action to  public safety.

Fishing and swimming have been prohibited along the coastline due to the current weather patterns.

Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, speaking during a press briefing in Kisumu, highlighted the potential risks posed by the prevailing weather conditions.

Despite the weakening of Cyclone Hidaya, counties along the coast, including Kwale, Mombasa, Lamu, and Kilifi, are expected to encounter heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds, presenting life-threatening hazards.

“The Kenya Met department has reported a significant decrease in the strength of Cyclone Hidaya. While the remnant clouds associated with the cyclone have dissipated, Kwale, Mombasa, and Kilifi are anticipated to witness moderate to heavy rainfalls offshore, along with strong winds that may extend inland over the coming days,” Mwaura explained.

To ensure prompt response and emergency evacuation if necessary, the Kenya Coast Guard has mobilized one ship and three boats to patrol the coastal waters.

Additionally, the Interior Ministry, through the Kenya Police, has deployed six helicopters to assist in evacuation efforts.

“The Kenya Coast Guard is actively patrolling the Indian Ocean, with additional boats deployed and manned by 20 officers on standby,” Mwaura reassured.

These measures underscore the government’s commitment to prioritizing public safety amidst adverse weather conditions.

The suspension of beach activities serves as a precautionary measure to mitigate potential risks and protect coastal communities from harm.

A few days ago,  Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir issued an order halting beach activities and fishing trips until midnight Monday in response to the cyclone Hidaya advisory for the Kenyan coast.

Nassir urged hotels to ensure the safety of their guests until the reassessment of the cyclone’s impact on Monday night.
