GERMANY – Clean label ingredients producer KRÖNER-STÄRKE has opened a €36 million (US$38.8 million) facility dedicated to producing natural and organic meat alternatives.
Known for its bakery ingredients, the company is now venturing into the growing market for alternative proteins by launching a new line of textured vegetable protein (TVP) meat substitutes.
The company’s investment has resulted in the construction of a new plant wing equipped with machinery for drum drying and extrusion processes.
The facility will use wheat and pea proteins to manufacture a range of extruded products, including granules, fibers, strips, and powders.
The new product line addresses concerns about the artificial and highly processed nature of many meat substitutes, as KRÖNER-STÄRKE emphasizes that its production methods rely on natural ingredients.
Processing will be carried out using untreated spring water, heat, and physical methods, avoiding the use of chemicals. Additionally, the company plans to offer organic options.
KRÖNER-STÄRKE expects strong demand for its products amid rising interest in plant-based foods.
The new range is designed for use in convenience foods such as burgers, sausages, and sauces. The extruded powders are also suited for protein enrichment in baked goods and low-carb products.
Henrik de Vries, Commercial Director at KRÖNER-STÄRKE, stated that this move represents a significant expansion for the company.
“We’ve been producing ingredients like spelt gluten for use in meat replacement products for some time, so this new facility is a natural progression,” he said.
While the company is focusing on wheat-based proteins due to their neutral flavor and meat-like texture, it will also offer customizable products tailored to customer preferences, including alternative substrates and protein blends.
KRÖNER-STÄRKE anticipates strong demand for its new products due to the growing trend of reduced meat consumption.
These products are particularly suited for use in vegan burgers, sausages, and sauces.
Additionally, the powdered extruded proteins provide a practical option for enhancing protein content in baked goods and low-carb items.
